It was this quote by musician Paul Kantner that first sparked our imagination as we set out to create a collection of handbags that would capture the rugged beauty and independent spirit of this iconic city. Inspired by the allure and eclectic vibe of San Francisco, 49 Square Miles crafts the highest quality Italian materials into bags that are as functional as they are beautiful and improve naturally with age.
Lisa Rissetto is the founder and creative director of 49 Square Miles. Growing up, she was surrounded by strong women who cherished great design. Her mother, aunt, and grandmother, all fiercely independent, taught her the importance of having an independent vision, of sharing and connecting with others, a love for things that were both elegant and practical, and an appreciation for the enduring quality of heirloom pieces.
Drawn to California by her work with the Esprit brand and held here by its openness and physical beauty, Lisa found herself further inspired by the innovative, independent spirit of San Francisco’s past and present. She was part of a founding team which developed accessories for major retailers across the country, and longed to create something of enduring quality that spoke to her Italian heritage and classic yet eclectic aesthetic. Forty nine square miles launched with a collection of handbags and belts made from full vegetable tanned leathers from Italy with hand-stitched details and solid brass hardware.
