Lisa Rissetto – Founder & Designer
Growing up, Lisa Rissetto was surrounded by strong women who cherished great design. Her mother, aunt, and grandmother—all fiercely independent, best friends, generous and nurturing—taught her the importance of having an independent vision, of sharing and connecting with others, a love for things that were both elegant and practical, and an appreciation for the enduring quality of heirloom pieces.
Drawn to California by her work with the Esprit brand and held here by its openness and physical beauty, Lisa found herself further inspired by the innovative, independent spirit of San Francisco’s past and present.
49 Square Miles was born out of this love story: love for the proud women who raised her and love for a place whose history and spirit stand for the same thing that her mother, aunt and grandmother stood for.
Lisa Rissetto was part of a founding team which developed accessories for many of the major retailers across the US. Her deep experience in the field led to an acute appreciation for and personal relationships with many of the Italian tanneries based in the Tuscany region of Italy. Recognizing their passion and commitment to traditional methods of creating beautiful, naturally finished leathers, she set out to create a collection of handbags and belts that would support this community as well as express her personal vision. 49 Square Miles was born, featuring unique hand-stitched details and signature solid brass hardware.
Beautiful By Nature
Vegetable-tanned leather absorbs the traces of our life, it matures, it tans under the sun, it reveals the signs of time and use as the most personal expression of naturalness and truth.
